Ara-C (Cytarabine, Cytosar)

What Does It Look Like?

Clear Liquid

How Is It Given?

  • Intramuscular (muscle)
  • Subcutaneous (under the skin)
  • Intrathecal (into spinal fluid)
  • Intravenous (vein)

Why Am I Taking It?

Ara-C is an anti-cancer drug that stops cell growth and division. It is used to treat several kinds of leukemia.

What Side Effects May Occur?

You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.

Low Blood Counts

  • A drop in blood cell counts, especially white blood cells and platelets, occurs within 1-3 weeks after treatment. Blood tests will be done to monitor this.
  • Tell your doctor about any signs of infection or bleeding. Avoid situations where you may be exposed to people with infections.

Nausea, Vomiting, Appetite Loss

  • May experience nausea and/or vomiting. Medications will be available to control these symptoms.
  • May have diarrhea, abdominal pain, or ulcers may develop. Tell your doctor if you notice any blood in your vomit or in your stools or if your stools are black and tarry.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (2-3 quarts/day) after therapy.

Nervous System

  • May become lethargic, confused, or have difficulty using your hands and feet correctly.
  • May cause numbness and/or tingling in the hands and feet.

Fever

  • May experience a flu-like feeling with fever, headache, pain in the joints.

Skin Changes

  • May develop a rash or freckling, especially with exposure to sunlight.
  • Protect your skin when you are outside by wearing a hat or cap and using sunscreen.
  • In the summer, try to limit the time you are outside in the sun, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., when the sun's rays are the strongest.
  • Mouth sores may develop. Inspect your mouth daily. Rinse your mouth after meals and at bedtime with a mild salt water solution. Call the doctor if you notice sores or bleeding.

Eyes

  • Irritation and redness of the eyes may develop.

Special Notes

Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm counts may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or father children while taking this drug.
