Bleomycin (Blenoxane)

What Does It Look Like?

Clear to pale yellow liquid

How Is It Given?

  • Intravenous (vein)
  • Intra-muscular (muscle)
  • Subcutaneous (under the skin)
  • Can also be put into a chest tube to help control fluid build-up around the lungs caused by cancer cells

Why Am I Taking It?

Bleomycin is an anti-cancer drug that stops cell growth by preventing cancer cells from dividing and using proteins. It is used to treat head and neck cancers, lymphomas, testicular cancer, and to control fluid build-up around the lungs caused by cancer cells.

What Side Effects May Occur?

You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.

Allergic Reaction

  • May have symptoms of wheezing, shortness of breath, itching, rash, hives or swelling around the eyes.
  • You may be given a very small dose as a test dose before you receive your chemotherapy to check for a possible allergic reaction.

Fever/Chills

  • You may have a high fever, up to 103-105 degrees, with or without chilling. Your doctor may prescribe Tylenol or other medication to control this.
  • It is important to drink plenty of fluids so you don't become dehydrated.

Lung Problems

May cause damage to lung tissue. Symptoms might be coughing, trouble breathing, shortness of breath, or fluid in your lungs.

Skin Changes

  • May cause an increase in the pigment or color of your skin; swelling, redness, and peeling of the skin on the palms of the hands, fingers, arm, and leg joints may occur.
  • May develop thickened ridges on your fingernails.
  • May cause mouth sores to develop. Inspect your mouth daily. Rinse your mouth after meals and at bedtime with a mild salt-water solution.

Nausea, Vomiting, Appetite Loss

  • Usually mild. Medications will be available to control these symptoms.
  • You may not feel hungry, may lose weight and be tired.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (2-3 quarts per day) after therapy.

Low Blood Counts

  • May cause a drop in blood cell counts. Blood tests will be done to monitor your blood cell counts.
  • Call your doctor if you notice any signs of infection or bleeding. Avoid situations where you might be exposed to people with infections.

Special Notes

Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm count may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
