What Side Effects May Occur?

You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you experience. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report problems to your doctor.

Diarrhea

  • This is a common side effect. There are two types of diarrhea that may occur. One type starts during or within hours of getting the treatment. The other type generally starts 11 days after treatment. These two types of diarrhea are different, so different medicines are used to treat the problem. Keep track of your diarrhea and report any immediately to your doctor or nurse so instructions for managing the diarrhea can be given to you.
  • Drink at least 8 large glasses of liquids a day. Drink fluids like clear broth and Gatorade. Don't drink fruit juices.
  • Avoid dairy products, alcohol, coffee, teas, laxatives and magnesium containing antacids while you have diarrhea. Fatty, fried or spicy foods, bran cereals and raw vegetables may worsen your diarrhea.
  • Call you doctor again if treatment for diarrhea is not effective.
  • Don't take any diarrhea medication unless you get diarrhea and only after calling your physician or nurse.

Low Blood Counts

  • The white blood cell count may drop moderately. Blood tests will be done to monitor this.
  • Call your doctor if you notice any signs of infection or bleeding.
  • Avoid situations where you might be exposed to people with infections.

Nausea, Vomiting, Appetite Loss

  • Some patients may become nauseated or actually vomit. Medications will be available to control these symptoms.

Hair Loss

  • Many people lose some hair. About one-third lose a small amount of hair and another one-third lose most or all of their hair.
  • Hair loss is temporary.

Special Notes:

Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm counts may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
