Carboplatin

Why Am I Taking It?
Carboplatin is an anti-cancer drug that stops cell growth and division. This drug is primarily used to treat ovarian cancer, but it is also used for other types of cancer, such as certain lung cancers, head and neck cancer, cancer of the esophagus, bladder cancer, and testicular cancer.
What Side Effects May Occur?
You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you experience. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report problems to your doctor.
Low Blood Counts

A drop in blood cell counts occurs about 21 days after treatment.

Blood tests will be done to monitor this. Call your doctor for any signs of bleeding or infection. Avoid situations where you may be exposed to people with infections.
Nausea, Vomiting, Appetite Loss

Nausea often occurs within 24 hours. Medication will be available to control these symptoms if they occur.

May experience diarrhea. Drink plenty of fluids, (2-3 quarts per day) after therapy. Call your doctor if you notice blood in your stools or if they are tarry.

May cause sores in your mouth. Inspect your mouth daily. Rinse your mouth after meals and at bedtime with a mild salt water solution. Call the doctor if you notice sores or bleeding.
Hair Loss

Occurs in about 3% of people receiving Carboplatin

Hair will grow back after therapy is finished.

May affect both head and body hair.
Nervous System

May cause some numbness or tingling of hands and feet or both.

May cause some taste disturbances.

Slight change of hearing loss or ringing in the ears.
Kidney Function

May cause some damage to the kidneys. If you need antibiotics, remind your physician that you have received this drug as some antibiotics are hard on the kidneys.

Blood tests will be done to monitor your kidney function.

Drink 2-3 quarts of fluid per day while receiving this medication.
Liver Function
May cause some damage to the liver which usually goes away after the therapy with Carboplatin is finished.
Special Notes:
Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm counts may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
