Daunomycin (Cerubidine, Daunorubicin)
What Does It Look Like?
Red, clear liquid
How Is It Given?
Intravenous (vein)
Why Am I Taking It?
Daunomycin is an anti-cancer drug that stops cell growth and division. It is used to treat leukemias, lymphomas, rhabdomyosarcoma, neuroblastoma, and Ewing's sarcoma.
What Side Effects May Occur?
You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.
Low Blood Counts

A drop in blood cell counts, especially white blood cells occurs within 1-2 weeks after treatment.

Blood tests will be done to monitor your blood counts.

Tell your doctor about any signs of infection or bleeding. Avoid situations where you may be exposed to people with infections.
Nausea, Vomiting, Appetite Loss

Medication will be available to help control the nausea and vomiting if they occur.

May experience diarrhea. Drink plenty of fluids (2-3 quarts a day). Tell your doctor if the diarrhea does not stop or if you notice blood in your stools or they are tarry.
Hair Loss
Skin Changes

Tissue destruction and ulceration may occur if the fluid leaks from the vein. Tell the nurse immediately if you notice any stinging at the IV site.

Darkening of the skin over areas where radiation therapy was given may occur.

Skin rash, darkening of the skin or loosening of the nails may occur.

May cause sores in your mouth. Inspect your mouth daily. Rinse after meals and at bedtime with a mild salt water solution. Call the doctor if you notice sores or bleeding.
Heart Problems

Your urine may become red colored for 1-2 days after receiving this drug. This is not blood, but it may stain your clothes.

Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm count may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
