Gemzar (Gemcitabine)

What Does It Look Like?

How Is It Given?

Intravenous (vein)

Why Am I Taking It?

Gemzar causes cancer cells to die by interfering with the DNA structure of the cells. Gemzar is approved to treat pancreas and lung cancers. Gemzar is being studied for the treatment of other cancers.

What Side Effects May Occur?

You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.

Low Blood Counts

  • This is the most common reason for dose changes or treatments being held.
  • Low white blood cells (infection fighting cells) and platelets (clotting cells) are affected the most.
  • Blood tests will be done before each dose of Gemzar.
  • Call your doctor if you notice any signs of infection or bleeding.
  • Avoid situations where you might be exposed to people with infections.

Nausea, Vomiting

  • This is the most common side effect of Gemzar. About two-thirds of patients experience nausea and vomiting which is usually mild to moderate. Medication is available to help treat these symptoms.

Flu-Like Symptoms

  • Some patients experience fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, weakness and lack of appetite.
  • These symptoms are generally mild and do not last longer than 1-2 days. If these symptoms are bothersome, be sure to tell your doctor or nurse.

Rash

  • Report any rash to your doctor immediately to make sure you are not allergic to your chemotherapy drug.
  • It is possible to get a rash. If it happens, it is usually mild to moderate and may appear on the arms and legs or over the chest, back or stomach. It may or may not be itchy. Your doctor may prescribe a medicine to help with the itching and reduce swelling.
  • If you get a rash, cooler baths, showers or creams may help.

Hair Loss

  • Gemzar usually does not cause much hair loss.
  • The hair grows back after treatments are completed.

Swelling

  • Fluid may collect, generally in one or both legs causing swelling. Swelling may also occur in the hands or abdomen.
  • The swelling is usually mild to moderate and usually goes away after the Gemzar is stopped.

Special Notes

  • Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm counts may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
