How Is It Given?

Why Am I Taking It?
Hydroxyurea is an anti-cancer drug that stops cell growth. This drug is used to treat several kinds of cancer, including leukemia, head and neck cancers, melanoma, ovarian, and colon cancers.
What Side Effects May Occur?
You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.
Low Blood Counts

A drop in blood cell counts, especially white blood cells, occurs within 10 days after treatment.

Tell your doctor about any signs of infection or bleeding.

Your blood will be sampled regularly to match your blood counts.

Avoid situations where you may be exposed to people with infections.
Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea/Constipation, Mouth Sores

Uncommon in low doses.

Drugs may be ordered to control these symptoms if they occur.

Mouth soreness may develop. Keep your mouth as clean as possible by brushing your teeth and rinsing frequently with a mild salt water solution, especially after meals and at bedtime.

Call your doctor if your mouth gets sore, or if you see sores or bleeding.
