Taxol (Paclitaxel)

What Does It Look Like?

Slightly hazy, colorless liquid

How Is It Given?

Intravenous (vein)

Why Am I Taking It?

Taxol is an anti-cancer drug that stops cell growth by preventing cancer cells from dividing. It is being used to treat ovarian cancer. It is also being used to treat breast, lung, renal, and other cancers.

What Side Effects May Occur?

You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.

Heart, Blood Pressure

  • May cause your heart to beat very slowly or irregularly. This is more likely to happen if you have had heart problems in the past.
  • May cause your blood pressure to be lower than normal. Your blood pressure will be checked frequently during the Taxol infusion.

Nervous System

  • May cause numbness or tingling in your hands and feet.

Low Blood Counts

  • A drop in your blood cell counts usually occurs. The lowest point, or nadir, is from around the 8th to the 11th day after treatment.
  • Blood tests will be done to monitor this.
  • Call your doctor about any signs of infection or bleeding. Avoid situations where you might be exposed to people with infections.

Allergic Reaction

  • Symptoms of flushing, trouble breathing, rash or hives, a drop in blood pressure, or rapid pulse may occur.
  • Tell the nurse immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.
  • You will be given medications before treatment to help prevent allergic reaction.

Muscle/Bone Pain

  • May have pain in the muscles and large joints of the arms and legs, usually occurring 2 to 3 days after treatment.
  • Medication will be available to control this pain if it occurs.

Hair Loss

  • Includes head, eyelashes, eyebrows and body hair. Hair will grow back after treatment with Taxol is finished.

Nausea, Vomiting, Appetite Loss

  • May have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
  • Medication will be available to control the nausea and vomiting if they occur.
  • May develop sores in your mouth. Inspect your mouth daily. Rinse your mouth after meals and at bedtime with a mild salt water solution.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (2-3 quarts/day) after therapy.

Special Notes

  • Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm counts may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
