Genesis Hosts Diabetes Family Weekend
DAVENPORT, Iowa – Parents with children newly diagnosed with diabetes may have more questions than answers and may be looking for a network of support from others facing the same situation.
They will be able to find the answers, and the support, from Diabetes Family Weekend at Genesis Medical Center.
Camp Hertko Hollow, an Iowa-based summer camp and diabetes education organization, will be holding Diabetes Family Weekend on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Adler Conference Center located in the lower level of the Genesis Heart Institute.
The daylong event will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m.
"Family Weekend will be a great way for adults and children to learn new diabetes management and control techniques, make new friends, and have fun by participating in activities,’’ explained Dr. Catherine Weideman, medical director of Genesis Regional Center for Diabetes Care and a volunteer of Camp Hertko Hollow camps. "Having a child diagnosed with diabetes can be a challenge for parents and other family members.
"The Family Weekend gives parents and family members the opportunity to meet, talk and gain support from other families with children who have diabetes.’’
Children with diabetes will learn new diabetes control techniques and participate in games and activities with their new friends.
Discussion topics for adults will include: The Basics of Diabetes Care and Sick Days; new medications; new insulin pumps; sports and exercise and a panel discussion of teens who are camp counselors.
Camp Hertko Hollow provides an educational and recreational camping program for Iowa's youth between the ages of 6-18 who have diabetes. The organization promotes diabetes management skills that allow youth with diabetes to gain independence and a positive attitude for controlling diabetes
All family members and close friends are invited to attend.
Cost will be $25 for adults and $10 for children five years old and older. The fee includes lunch and snacks.
