DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Older adults are hospitalized for fall-related injuries five times more often than they are for injuries from other causes. The good news is that those who do light exercise can show rapid improvement in muscle strength and endurance.

A Genesis Fall Prevention Program is designed to help older adults improve their level of strength so they can better perform daily tasks while limiting risk of falls.  The program begins April 15.

Functional fitness assessment tests given to participants both before and after the 16 sessions have shown increases in agility, coordination, strength, and standing balance. “The results have been tremendous,” said Doug Boleyn, Manager of Therapeutic Recreation at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport.  “The progressive resistance training we do is designed to build power as opposed to strength, so individuals who stumble can respond more quickly to correct and maintain their balance."

Progressive resistance training using light weights helps strengthen the muscle groups in the legs, the core or mid-section, and some muscle groups in the upper body.  Participants control the pace at which they work.

Cost of the eight-week program beginning April 15 is $150 and includes 16 sessions and a pre-assessment and post-assessment.  Classes are Tuesdays and Fridays at Genesis Outpatient Rehabilitation Services at Valley Fair Mall in Davenport or at the Genesis Wellness Center in Bettendorf.
