DAISY Award Winner - February 2022
Congratulations to our February DAISY Award Winner Abbey Lucier, R.N.
Abbey is a registered nurse in our Cardiovascular Stepdown Unit at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport.
Here's what Abbey's nominator had to say about her:
"In January, I was admitted to Genesis Medical Center. I was helped by many fine healthcare professionals. However, Abbey stands out!
The doctor explained some of the testing I had received but it was Abbey, after the doctor had left, that looked at my wife and I and simply said, “You have pneumonia.” That was understandable news to us.
She then went on to simply state what treatment was being launched, what meds were being administered and how it all fit together. Plain and simple language. She answered all of our many questions.
At one point, the steroids I was given spiked my glucose levels. Abbey immediately began working with the doctor to balance my levels out. It was clear she had worked with diabetic patients in the past.
Abbey was great at keeping my wife and I updated on my treatment plan and the progress I was making.
As discharge time approached, Abbey took extra time teaching me how to give myself an insulin shot – which I had never done before. I’m quite nervous about needles and other sharp objects. She knew my “needle aversion” but encouraged me to give myself a shot while she was present so I’d feel more comfortable doing it at home. Without her encouragement and patience, at home I would have had to watch a video online to figure out how to give myself insulin. Her time, experience and patience went way beyond the call of duty.
Lastly, she oversaw all of the discharge process — which was a little daunting. She worked to insure all of my necessary medications were available and helped me figure out prescription costs. She even chose to take me to the patient exit area even though she was very busy with other patients on the floor.
Abbey is truly a treasure for Genesis and our community."
