Game Preview by Steve Tappa, Shootout Historian
After playing varsity basketball as an 8th and 9th grader in Florida, Navon Shabazz returned home this season to attend Assumption. With scholarship offers already from Iowa State and Wake Forest, among several schools, the athletic guard ranks No. 1 among sophomores in Iowa and in the top 50 nationally by most recruiting services. Shabazz is hardly the only reason the Knights are ranked No. 2 in Iowa Class 3A. He joins three returning starters and Muscatine transfer Kayvion Hodges for Assumption coach Joe Ewen, another of those former Shootout stars turned head coach. Leading scorer Damyen Jackson and junior classmates Braylon Thomsen, Joey Funderburk, and Hodges all started as sophomores in the MAC last season. Jackson and Thomsen were honorable mention All-MAC selections. ... Former Rockridge coach Andy Saey makes his Shootout debut against these Knights, having moved to UT after back-to-back fourth-place Class 2A state finishes with the Rockets. The Panthers return a pair of senior starters in current scoring leaders Dominic Rhoden (15.6 ppg) and Caeden Terrell (14.3 ppg) -- with Rhoden earning honorable mention All-Big 6 honors a season ago. Sophomore point guard Synceare Simons has also begun living up to his hype as a freshman, leading UT in assists (4.6) and rebounds (6.2) per game. All three are receiving college recruiting interest, according to Saey.
