Game Preview by Steve Tappa, Shootout Historian

Moline's defending state champions square off with a North Scott squad expected to contend for the Class 4A crown in Iowa. The Lancers, including Iowa football-commit Kyler Gerardy, D-2 basketball-recruited big man Kavon Phillips, and D-3 Northwestern-bound Brennan Reid, are talented. All three returning seniors were All-MAC last season for North Scott coach Dave McLaughlin, with Phillips earning a first-team nod and the other two settling for second-squad honors. The Lancers' state title bid was bolstered by the offseason transfer of first-team All-MAC performer Jamarion Readus from Central. Meanwhile, despite graduating four senior starters, Moline's 600-plus victories and twin state-title-winning Hall of Fame coach Sean Taylor are blessed with ample defensive length, quality depth, and balanced scoring. Junior forward and third-year varsity player Trey Taylor is the only returning starter -- but fellow junior forward Braden Freeman, brother of Iowa Hawkeyes freshman star Owen Freeman, played a vital role off the bench. Both should be big college recruits with solid seasons. The rest of the Maroons' versatile lineup includes two freshmen regulars -- Arthur Abbey and Brady Welch, who average over 5 ppg.
