Game Preview by Steve Tappa, Shootout Historian
Former Rock Island All-Stater and Triple-A pro David Robinson is tackling perhaps his most challenging coaching task in steadily rebuilding a 2-time state title-winning program. As the West coach noted at the Shootout tipoff press conference, the Falcons are adjusting to new roles while still mourning the tragic drowning death this summer of first-team All-MAC guard Jermilyn Gardner. Senior big man Idris Thomas has helped fill the void -- averaging a double-double of 25.5 points and ten rebounds in the early going. The Falcons also have double-figure scoring in the backcourt from senior Davante Bradford (17.0 points, 5.0 assists) and junior Keylin Lacourse (10 ppg). Galesburg is battling some adversity of its own. Starters Ian Dominique Jr. (knee/back) and Leslie Kelley IV (long-term sickness) have been banged up already, said Streaks coach Chad Thompson -- one of the eight Shootout playing alums graduating to head coaching over the event's 29-year history. Thompson considers seniors Dominique and Gino Williams his top two returning players. Galesburg's most promising, though, are sophomore starters Kelley and Jackson Crock-Sibbing.
