Game Preview by Steve Tappa, Shootout Historian
United Township coach Ryan Webber returns a pair of All-Big 6 players in seniors Darius Rogers and Mahki Johnson. Junior De'Vontay Wright also is a 3-year starter and draws praise from his veteran coach for outstanding effort on both ends of the floor. The Panthers also have three sophomores pushing for minutes this season -- Caden Terrell, Dominic Rhoden and Dvonte Cartwright. ... Early-season MAC scoring leader Noah Mack and fellow senior J.J. Stratman are the only starters back for Joe Ewen, the former Davenport North head coach taking over at his alma mater. Mack, who popped for 38 points in the season opener, is expecting scoring help from Alleman transfer Rico Byrd, the junior point guard. Luke Klostermann, the Knights' top sophomore last season, is now a junior starter, too. Mack and Stratman are college baseball recruits -- Mack looking to join his brother at Division I Grand Canyon; Stratman at the D-3 level. Another senior, Reese Harris, has a hoops offer from D-3 Dubuque. The biggest basketball recruit -- 6-9 foreign exchange student and D-1 prospect Ivan Prug -- won't be eligible to suit up for the Knights until after the Shootout. ... DYK: Co-founder United Township shoots for an event-leading 16th victory, but Assumption has won 4 of 7 Shootout meetings including the most recent in 2018 (48-45). This is the third time in the last four Shootouts the schools have met.
