Game Preview by Steve Tappa, Shootout Historian

New Rock Island coach and Shootout great Marc Polite is blessed with three college prospects. Besides all-conference returners Amarion Nimmers and 6-5 Marieon Anderson, the Rocks boast a third returning starter in fellow senior Baker Beal, the 6-5 brother of South Carolina star/former 3-peat Illinois Ms. Basketball Brea Beal. The defending Big 6 champs are ranked sixth in the initial Illinois Class 3A state poll. Expect the Rocks to run waves of quality depth and defensive pressure at their foes. ... Pleasant Valley, which received honorable mention in the first Iowa Class 4A poll, is part of a series of state-ranked foes scheduled in mid-December for the Rocks. Veteran Spartans coach Steve Hillman has a pair of seniors eyeing D-3 college hoops -- first-team All-MAC performer Ryan Dolphin, the club's only returning starter, and last season's sixth-man Joel Lawlor. The defending MAC champs and state tourney qualifiers are small but skilled, and always exhibit defensive toughness to go with a patient, unselfish offense. ... DYK: PV rides a six Shootout winning streak into tonight. Included is a 2015 victory over Rocky (50-47) in the only Shootout meeting between the schools.
