What is an M.S.L.T.?

Your doctor may have ordered an M.S.L.T., or multiple sleep latency test, to be completed after a sleep study. This is a separate procedure from the sleep study.

The multiple sleep latency test (M.S.L.T.) is an objective test to evaluate sleepiness and will also be used to measure the results of your treatment.

You will be asked to lie down and relax four or five times per day in two-hour intervals. Your sleep will be monitored on all four or five occasions. The electrodes will remain connected to your scalp during the day, but will be concealed as much as possible. Your are free to wear a hat or scarf.

Between tests, a room will be made available for you to relax and watch TV, read or work on a project brought from home. Outpatients may leave the hospital and return for each test. It is very important to remain alert and not fall asleep between tests. This day of tests is usually finished by 5:00 p.m. There are no side effects from this test.
