Joe Malas, CPA
Vice President, Finance, and Chief Financial Officer, MercyOne Genesis
Areas of Responsibility: All financial matters for the health system, including but not limited to, oversight of finance, accounting, insurance, cash and debt management, payroll, revenue cycle management, payor contracting, financial regulatory compliance, internal audit, business analysis and reimbursement and budgeting. Responsible for the development, interpretation, coordination and administration of the organization's policies on finance, accounting, internal controls, financial planning, treasury functions and auditing.
Bio: Malas joined Genesis in July 2020 after 18 years with Downers Grove-based Advocate Health Care, the largest health system in Illinois. There, he served multiple roles as Controller/Director/Executive Director of Financial Services for Advocate Sherman Hospital. His other positions within Advocate included: Vice President Finance and Integration (Advocate Children’s Hospital), Executive Finance Director (Shared Revenue Cycle Organization), and Controller/Director Financial Services (Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital). He began his career in health care as an Accountant at Advocate’s corporate headquarters, after working in the marketing and transportation industries.
Malas is a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., with Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Operations Management. He also holds a master’s degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Finance, from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Malas has volunteered for many years serving as Chairman of the Board, Vice Chair/Treasurer and Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Downers Grove Chamber of Commerce and as Chairman of the Finance Committee for St. Laurence Catholic Church.
Malas and his wife, Margaret, have two sons.
