GAIN - MercyOne Genesis Adventures In Nursing Camp

Camp is held each summer at MercyOne Genesis Davenport Medical Center, Davenport and provides an opportunity for high school students--9th grade through 12th grade--to explore nursing and health care careers. The camp is designed to inspire and enlighten campers during an exciting week-long adventure, where participants will have first-hand encounters in various nursing and health care opportunities and through hands-on mock situations and simulations experience what it may be like to be a MercyOne Genesis nurse.

GAIN Camp 2024 was a huge success! Three individual week-long sessions were held to accommodate 60 campers. Campers were from 21 Iowa and Illinois Quad City area high schools ranging in age from 14 to 18, representing seven diverse ethnicities.  15% of our campers received full scholarships to attend GAIN Camp!

Stay tuned for GAIN Camp 2025 dates!

Testimonial from 2023 Camper Maci Massa

“I am reaching out to explain the experience I had at the GAIN Camp this past week. It was an amazing camp that Genesis held. It was designed to deliver an engaging week-long adventure, where participants will have first-hand contacts with various nursing and health care opportunities and, via hands-on mock situations and simulations, discover what it may be like to be a Genesis nurse.

"I couldn’t have asked for a better experience with becoming close with the ladies and gentleman that I have met through this Camp. I was happy with the staff that were so welcoming and guided us throughout the day. I watched two surgeries, visited the helicopter pad, toured an ambulance and learned what’s all inside with amazing devices that can save a person’s life without even knowing, toured the different units like CCU, ER, ICU, NICU, Oncology and Neurology, OR, Open heart recovery, Cardiac step-down unit, and Cath Lab and so much more all in one week.

"This was a great experience to get my feet wet in all areas and paths that nursing can lead into. Even if you don’t want to be a nurse it’s a great way to experience what you can do without being a nurse. Each unit we did an activity to go along with the corresponding floor. I saw things that I would never have been able to see as a patient. I was certified for the Stop The Bleed Program. I learned how to take vitals, give CPR, and safe patient handling, and administering insulin plus many more. During the mock trauma it was cool to actually handle a patient and then get assigned roles to everyone and learn what goes on in a trauma room. We did a nurse panel that really opened up a lot of questions deeper then I would have ever thought.

"There are so many resources that are provided for you as a nurse in any health care system. I GAINed so much from this camp!”
