Career Exploration – MercyOne Genesis

Job shadow experiences are available at MercyOne Genesis for individuals 18 years and older who have a particular interest in learning more about various careers within the healthcare sector. Participants interested in a shadow experience must complete an online request (see link below) and required forms to ensure that the experience meets the needs of the participant. Job shadow experiences are provided for a limited duration on a single day.

Job shadowing in critical care areas—such as the below are not permitted:

• Intensive Care Unit (All)
• Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
• Operating Room
• Cardiac Cath Lab
• Behavioral Health Unit
• All Partnerships

Guidelines for Eligible Job Shadowing Individuals

• Must have an approved identification sticker provided by the screening desk that clearly identifies the observer as a VISITOR
• Must comply with MercyOne Genesis Health System Professional Appearance Policy and be respectful with patients and others at all times
  • Dress Code - Business Casual
  • Masking
  • No Jeans
  • Must not wear hospital uniforms that may give the perception of medical training, competency, or employment with MercyOne Genesis (i.e scrubs, lab coats, etc.)
  • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes - no sandals or open-toed shoes.

Due to integration efforts, job shadow opportunities are currently paused for the month of December.

While MercyOne Genesis does allow job shadows with physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, our process is such that as the requester you are responsible to arrange and schedule the opportunity.

We encourage the use of the find-a-doctor search to search by specialty or location and from there you will need to contact the offices directly to inquire about job shadowing. If you get something scheduled with a provider on MercyOne Genesis's staff, please e-mail ghs_jobshadow@mercyone.org with the following information: Full Legal Name, Provider Name, Provider Location, Date and Time of pre-arranged job shadow. Once received, a member of the MercyOne Genesis team will be in contact with you regarding the required documentation. This documentation must be completed and approved prior to the shadow experience taking place.

We are excited to offer observation experiences for academic purposes, such as hours needed for an application to a college or university health care related program.

Observation experiences must be pre-arranged by you as the requester through contacting the department and or area to confirm placement.

Individuals completing observations (up to 20 hours) onsite must adhere to the following:

• Be age 18 or older.
• Follow all directives of the personnel overseeing the experience.
• May not interfere with the care/treatment of any patient and or disrupt department activity.
• Remain in the designated department during all observational periods unless excused by the coordinating personnel.
• Keep all patient information confidential and all hospital information private.
• May not provide care or treatment.
• Acknowledge the patient’s right to refuse observation.

Lead time: 30 days*

Completed forms must be submitted 30 days prior to the requested placement and will go to the attention of Workforce Development Specialist(s) MercyOne Genesis.
