Welcome to Volunteer Services
Volunteers are an integral and valuable component of MercyOne Genesis. We value the time that our volunteers put in to help not only patients and visitors, but our employees and physicians as well. We would love for you to join our team!
Benefits of Volunteering
Due to our busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, volunteering can be beneficial to you, your family, and your community. The right match can help you to reduce stress, find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills and gain valuable work experience!
Requirements to volunteer at MercyOne Genesis:
All GHS Volunteers are required to have:
- Current immunization records
- Have a Flu Shot (all volunteers during flu season)
- Complete a Background Check (volunteers 18 and older)
- Be Tested for TB (volunteers 18 and older)
In addition to the above requirements MercyOne Genesis Medical Center Volunteers who are 18 and older are required to clear a physical prior to volunteering.

All GMC Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to apply.
We ask volunteers to commit to at least one volunteer shift a week in their assigned department.

At-Home Volunteer
At-Home Volunteer
An At-Home Volunteer is someone who Knits or Crochets baby hats and/or blankets outside of the hospital.

All potential At-Home volunteers must complete the At-Home Volunteer Application. Once our department receives your online application, we will be in touch with details about reporting hours and the patterns that MercyOne Genesis uses.

Compassionate Canines
Compassionate Canines
Compassionate Canine Volunteers are volunteers who use specially trained and qualified dogs to provide therapeutic interactions between registered therapy dogs and patients in order to facilitate recovery, socialization, and adjustment to hospitalization.

Volunteers must:
- Must complete a Compassionate Canine Volunteer Application. Our department will review your application and if you are a match, we will call you for a phone interview.
- Attend a 2 hour orientation at MercyOne Genesis Davenport Medical Center.
- Pass a physical with Occupational Health.
- Pass a background check.
Your Dog must:
- Be registered with a National Therapy Dog certification program.
- Owners must show proof that their dog is current with National Therapy Dog Certification which includes license and insurance through an organization such as Therapy Dogs Inc. or QCCAN.
- Show proof of current vaccinations and be free of parasites as certified by a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. This must be submitted annually.
- Be clean and well groomed.
