If you or your loved one has suffered a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), treatment will be received by the interdisciplinary team of professionals at MercyOne Genesis Medical Center, whose goal is to provide quality, motivating & compassionate care. A comprehensive and individualized plan of care will be developed to help you receive the maximum functional improvement in the shortest amount of time possible.

The experienced physicians and other health care professionals at MercyOne Genesis Medical Center address the medical conditions and related issues of patients with SCI that affect the patient and their families. It is our goal to maximize potential for neurological recovery and functional mobility and to minimize any associated conditions or complications.

The professional treatment team consists of a physiatrist (rehab doctor), nurses, occupational therapist, physical therapist, respiratory therapist, speech language pathologist, therapeutic recreation specialist, social worker, spiritual care associate, dietitian, and wound care specialist who have multiple years of experience. The team of professionals caring for the patient have received additional training at local and national seminars. 

Treatment Includes the Following Areas

Bowel/bladder training, skin integrity, understanding and managing respiratory function, seating/positioning, adaptive equipment training, activities of daily living, environmental control systems, sexual function, wheelchair management, home management modifications, driver's evaluation and training, bracing, spasticity management, pain management, community retraining, psychosocial management, functional mobility, vocational referrals, nutrition, general health, preventive health care, and financial/community resources.

Genesis Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program has many educational resources available to patients and families. Patients are also encouraged to participate in the Quad City Spinal Cord Injury Support Group. Including the family in rehabilitation is very important at Genesis. Family members are strongly encouraged to participate in therapies, educational sessions, family conferences, and therapeutic outings. A full spectrum of rehabilitation services are available to help continue your rehabilitation after discharge from the hospital.

Special Genesis Medical Center Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program features Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America certified Assistive Technology Professionals to provide the most up to date information regarding equipment needs and options.

Genesis Spinal Cord System of Care

The experienced physician and healthcare professionals on the Genesis Spinal Cord System of Care team address the medical conditions of the spinal cord injury patient and all other issues that affect the patient and their families. Services are provided on a spectrum of care with inpatient and outpatient options, as well as VNA services.

The Genesis Spinal Cord System of Care team not only serves patients who are newly injured, but will also serve those who are experiencing a late onset complication of spinal cord injury and require a period of inpatient/outpatient hospitalization.
