Candidates for Weight Loss Surgery

The goal of bariatric surgery is to reduce and maintain permanent loss of a least half of the preoperative excess body weight, improving health and reducing weight-related health risks.  If you are considering gastric bypass surgery, you are required to meet a number of criteria. In most cases, you must:

The National Institute of Health requires:

  • A BMI of 40 or above
  • Or, a BMI of 35 or greater with a co-morbidity of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and/or sleep apnea.

We also ask that you:

  • Not use tobacco products including e-cigarettes and vaporizers for 8-10 weeks before surgery
  • Demonstrate a willingness to engage in lifestyle and nutritional habits known to support weight loss.
  • Have support from family, spouse, or close friends.
  • Surgery is not recommended for the patients known to abuse alcohol or drugs, or those with an eating disorder such as bulimia.
