Enthusiastic Reviews for Expanded Cancer Care
Genesis Medical Center-Silvis has opened its expanded cancer center to enthusiastic reviews and is now offering a convenient imaging option on site.
The cancer center at GMC-Silvis has been expanded and relocated to meet the needs of patients and staff. Among the changes are a larger lobby and larger treatment rooms. The cancer center also has a dedicated entrance.
“With this renovation, we have the space to handle the increased volume of patients we have had since Genesis added three experienced medical oncologists who practice here and in Davenport,’’ said Sarah Schmidt, manager of the cancer center at GMC-Silvis. “The cancer center has the look of a private clinic, with its own entrance rather than being part of the hospital.
“The cancer clinic is also closer to parking for patients. We all like having more space and a brighter look. We had a pretty tight space before the move.’’
The cancer center at GMC-Silvis also has added an imaging service. GMC-Silvis and Shared Medical Services (SMS) now offer patients Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography, otherwise known as PET/CT.
PET/CT imaging combines the functionality of PET imaging with the anatomical information available from a CT in one exam.
The PET scan detects changes in cellular function, specifically, how cells are using nutrients like sugar and oxygen while the CT scan takes cross-sectional images of the body. Together, the two imaging technologies provide information to assist physicians with early cancer diagnosis, accurate anatomical location and treatment strategies.
Denise White, radiology manager at GMC-Silvis, explained that PET/CT services are also at Genesis Imaging Center in Davenport. Genesis Medical Center in Aledo has received mobile PET/CT services from SMS since 2012 but this is a first for Genesis Medical Center-Silvis.
“We are excited to provide additional access and convenience for those needing a PET/CT,’’ White said. “This couldn’t come at a better time as Genesis continues to expand our cancer program at GMC/Silvis.
“We now have a more comprehensive level of cancer care within Genesis throughout the Quad-Cities.’’
On Thursday, eight patients were scheduled for scans on the specially designed Shared Medical Services truck and trailer in the parking lot of the Silvis campus. The response to the PET/CT service is surpassing projections.
In 2019, the Genesis Cancer Care Institute expanded with the addition of experienced medical oncologists Stewart Garneau, M.D., Michael Porubcin, M.D., and David Spector, M.D., Ph.D., to create a new regional model of cancer care. The physicians practice at offices in Silvis and Davenport.
