Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Close To Home in Aledo

Twice in the last 10 years, Bob Figanbaum has experienced shortness of breath, a common symptom of heart disease.

His first episode was in 2008, resulting in stents being placed to open blockages.

Two years ago he again started “slowing down,’’ as Figanbaum describes the feeling. He had open heart surgery at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street in Davenport.

After each procedure, he faithfully followed the rehabilitation program with one difference. An Aledo resident, Figanbaum was able stay close to home for rehabilitation after the open heart surgery.

Figanbaum participates in cardiac rehab“Both the rehabilitation programs helped me return to work and my routine, but being in the Aledo program was so much more convenient,’’ he explained. “And because it is a smaller program, there is a lot of personal attention.

“The staff in Aledo was great. They made sure I didn’t overexert myself, but at the same time I was able to push myself so I can stay active in my everyday life. They followed me very closely.

“I discovered the same program that worked for me in Davenport was available in Aledo. It’s like having a big city hospital rehabilitation program in Aledo.’’

The cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program at Genesis Medical Center, Aledo is celebrating its third year of offering services. More than 150 patients have participated in the program over the past three years.

“We’re fortunate to have a program like this in Aledo,’’ said Rusty Plunkett, physical therapist and supervisor of Genesis Physical Therapy, Aledo and its cardiac rehabilitation program. “Being part of a larger health care organization like Genesis gives us the opportunity to bring ‘big city’ quality while keeping a ‘small town’ feel.

“We are also fortunate to have a highly skilled, compassionate staff that can take the time with each individual patient.’’

Genesis Medical Center, Aledo also offers pulmonary rehabilitation for individuals who have been diagnosed with lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
