Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House
On November 7, 2006, the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, the first freestanding Hospice House in Eastern Iowa, opened after a little more than a year of fundraising, planning and construction. Fundraising began on May 9, 2005, and in less than one year, over $7.5 million was raised to construct this facility, which has become a home to many during the last days and weeks of life's journey.
The legacy of Clarissa C. Cook, who lived a life of compassion and generosity, has continued for 126 years following her death and will continue for decades to come. The Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House provides a comfortable setting where patients are able to pass peacefully, without pain, and with their loved ones around them.
The specialized care provided at the Hospice House includes:
- Registered nurses and hospice aides on site 24-hours per day
- Pain Management
- Music Therapy & Aromatherapy (Essential Oils)
- Massage, Comfort Touch, Reiki and Reflexology
- Social workers to assist with insurance questions, advanced directives and other legal documents, identifying community resources and meeting with family members
- Spiritual care
- Volunteers to assist with patient care, companionship, pet therapy and write letters/notes
- Recognition of Veterans' Military Services
- Bereavement Services for family members
- Respite care to give caregivers the opportunity to attend special events out of town
The Hospice House offers many physical amenities in addition to the specialized care that is provided:
- 16 specialized private patient rooms with accommodations for the patient and family, TV with DVD, private bath, individual patio
- 2 "Spas" featuring a specialized spa tub, shower and shampoo bowl/chair
- Meditation Room/Chapel
- 2 family rooms and a gathering area
- Showers and laundry facilities for families
- Children's room featuring activities for kids of all ages
- Dining room
